The fact of the matter is that when we were attacked on September 11, we had a choice to make. We could decide that the proximate cause was al Qaeda and the people who flew those planes into buildings and, therefore, we would go after al Qaeda…or we could take a bolder approach.

I know there is a word for it when politicians inadvertantly speak the truth instead of the expected spin, and this is definitely one of those situations, but my lexicon fails me.
Of course the 'bolder approach' was using 9-11 as the excuse to invade Iraq. Rather than pursue the terroritsts who actually launched the attack, or persecute/pressure the country from which they came (Saudi Arabia) Bush Co. determined the time was right for them to enact their master plan for the middle east.
Worth noting that Rice is the same person whose job it was to brief the President on such things as CIA information that 'Terrorists plan to attack US with planes', etc.

*ahem* I believe the term for meaning to say one thing, but actually communicating your true thoughts is a 'Freudian Slip'. Granted, it's usually associated with much more amusing comments like "Well, I think Ms. Johnson is the breast candidate for the job."
But m-w defines it as "a slip of the tongue that is motivated by and reveals some unconscious aspect of the mind"
